The Pithy Take

After the Uvalde shooting in May 2022, Congress passed and President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It is the first substantive gun legislation in decades, which does the following, and more:

– Enhances background checks for buyers younger than 21;
– Funds the implementation of red-flag laws;
– Expands the current prohibition that prevents convicted domestic abusers from buying or possessing guns;
– Prohibits interstate gun trafficking and straw purchasing;
– Funds community violence intervention programs;
– Invests in mental health services;
– Funds school safety funding.
